Faced with ongoing climate change, the need to modify our lifestyles and prepare our societies to adapt to its future consequences is now beyond question. Each individual must take their own share of the responsibility for doing so, but, as Geneviève Gallot shows in this article, those who shape our everyday life, the designers, also have a key role to play, and many of them have begun to commit to that role. Whether through objects themselves, their function in daily life, the materials used or those who manufacture them, an increasing number of designers, both in France and across the world, are involved in the development of ‘sustainable design’. Gallot paints a broad picture here of the way these designers are acting to bring about a more sustainable, inclusive, nature-friendly world and striving to help us bend our lifestyles in that direction.
